But their fortunes changed dramatically when the trio from New Jersey linked up with Salaam Remi, a young producer who at a young age already racked up credits for Biz Markie, Shabba Ranks, and Black Sheep. A blip on the radar - ultra-talented but iconoclastic, they were almost lost in the shuffle. The Fugees could have been relegated to the fringes of the hip-hop scene.

Released in 1994, the response to their debut was lukewarm the album received mixed reviews and never cracked the Billboard 200 charts. The group eventually caught the attention of Ronald Kahlis Bell, a co-founder of the legendary funk band Kool & the Gang, who guided them in the early days.Įventually, the group signed their first record deal with Ruffhouse/Columbia and finished recording their debut album, Blunted on Reality. Pras introduced Lauryn to Clef and The Tranzlator Crew and the The Fugees (short for Refugees, a nod to their Caribbean roots) was born. At Columbia High School - located in Maplewood, New Jersey - Pras met a freshman named Lauryn Hill, who was already a gifted singer and MC. Both being preachers’ kids in Brooklyn, New York, Clef and Pras developed as musicians by playing in their family’s churches, blending elements of gospel, reggae, and soul.Ĭlef and Pras both relocated to Newark, New Jersey as teenagers and lived in neighborhoods with large populations of people from the Caribbean diaspora. B.o.Wyclef Jean and his younger cousin Pras Michel both were born in Haiti and came to the United States as children.George Thorogood - One Bourbon, One Scotch And One Beer.Zooey Deschanel - Baby, It's Cold Outside.Mike & The Mechanics - In The Living Years.Gary Nichols - I Can't Love You Anymore.Florence + The Machine - Dog Days Are Over.Whitney Houston - I Will Always Love You.Neil Young - Don't Let It Bring You Down.David Banner & 9th Wonder - Death Of A Pop Star.Rant #13 - "You And Me Could Write A Bad Romance".Cage The Elephant - Thank You Happy Birthday.B Side Presents, "2010, We Hardly Knew Ye".B Side Presents, "Friday Gut Check - teRIFFic sounds".Gary Jules - Trading Snakeoil For Wolftickets.Adam Sandler - They're All Gonna Laugh At You.Rant #14 - "I Miss The Comfort In Being Sad".Fu-Gee-La (Sly & Robbie Remix, Bonus Track) Fu-Gee-La (Refugee Camp Remix, Bonus Track)ġ5. Doesn't matter what you're into, you'll like this. Sandler, but if you only have time for one - pick this. No, it's not perfect - but it's not far away from it. It's classic hip hop, some old school rap, some R&B and some indie music all rolled into one really fun album. There is NOTHING about this album that isn't great. They reunited briefly in the mid 2000's, but it lasted about a year, and they all have moved on and confirmed the Fugees are "dead". That is never more evident than in the 6x platinum status. And with the latter, it put this on the map for good in terms of the fans as well. It was their version of Marley's 'No Woman, No Cry' and Flack's 'Killing Me Softly' that put this album on the map for critics everywhere. This album dropped in 1996 and saw probably the biggest amount of buzz surrounding covers ever. This trio actually formed in 1992 as a Bee Gees tribute band. Wyclef is never short on great lyrics that make you want to keep listening to more. I don't think either of us respected Pac as much as we do today - but if you sit back and listen to this today, it's got much more value than just listening to the hits years ago. I actually recall us both listening to this record and the Sandler album as young kids back in the mid 90's. This also happened to be a Suggestion from follower Digger as well. Who didn't fall in love with The Score as a young teenager? I mean, it was a huge record.
Since I did Sandler, I decided to do a rap album from way back in the day too.
